North Korea warns of 'additional military options' against Japan over missile tests

SEOUL - Powerful sister of North Korean leader Kim Yo Jong on Wednesday warned Japan that Pyongyang would adopt "additional military options" in response to what she described as Japan's transformation into a "war state" with preemptive strike capabilities.

The statement, carried by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), condemned Japan's recent test-fire of Tomahawk long-range cruise missiles from the Aegis destroyer Chokai in the Pacific Ocean and its participation in U.S.-led joint military drills in the Philippines in May. Kim accused Tokyo of moving beyond a defensive posture, citing the deployment of Type 12 surface-to-ship missiles and plans to develop unmanned attack submarines.

She asserted that such military actions prove Japan's policy to acquire preemptive strike capabilities, introduced through its revised "national security strategy" in 2022, is now in its "actual act" phase. "The mass possession of different kinds of long-range strike means... makes Japan reorganize its overall armed forces as a formation of preemptive attack and overseas aggression," Kim stated.

Kim also accused the United States of enabling this military expansion by supplying Tomahawk missiles and providing support, using Japan and South Korea as a "shock brigade" in the Asia-Pacific region. She warned that "there is no guarantee that Japan, a war criminal state which has... made a political, military and legal footing for reinvasion, will not inflict tragic disaster upon humankind again".

Asserting that "voices of denunciation and warning alone cannot cool the wild ambition," Kim declared North Korea "will never remain a passive onlooker". She concluded that the armed forces and military leadership will establish "additional military options" in response to Japan's recent military transformation. The statement is seen by analysts as an effort to justify future North Korean military demonstrations and weapons tests.
