Myanmar Earthquake Death Toll Surges Past 3,000 as Aftershocks Persist

By The South Asia Times

MAYNAMR -  The death toll from the catastrophic earthquake in Myanmar has risen to over 3,000, with thousands more injured and missing as rescue operations continue in devastated areas. The powerful quake, which struck earlier this week, has left entire communities in ruins, forcing tens of thousands of people to seek shelter in open spaces due to ongoing aftershocks.

Rescue workers are struggling to reach remote areas, where collapsed buildings and landslides have buried countless victims. Officials fear the number of casualties will continue to rise as more bodies are recovered from the rubble. Hospitals are overwhelmed, and makeshift medical camps have been set up to treat the injured.

In neighboring Thailand, the disaster has also claimed at least 10 lives, with more than 100 people still missing. Efforts to locate survivors in hard-hit border regions are being hampered by damaged roads and unstable terrain.

Several countries, including China, Russia, and regional neighbors, have sent humanitarian aid to assist in the crisis. Emergency supplies such as food, water, and medical assistance have begun arriving, though distribution remains a challenge due to widespread destruction.

Fear and Uncertainty as Aftershocks Continue

The disaster has left survivors terrified, with many refusing to return to their homes as strong aftershocks continue to shake the region. Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious, warning that further tremors could cause additional damage.

With thousands still missing and emergency teams racing against time, Myanmar faces one of its deadliest natural disasters in recent history, leaving the nation in mourning and bracing for a long road to recovery.
