ISLAMABAD - Pakistan on Monday invited the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to become a partner and provide support in the preservation of Khewra Salt Mines, the world second largest and oldest salt mine.

During a meeting with the visiting Director General of UNESCO, Dr. Khaled El-Enany, Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reaffirmed his country's commitment to UNESCO's core values in advancing inclusive and quality education, safeguarding cultural heritage, and strengthening resilience in the face of global challenges, according to a statement issued from the PM's office.

"Prime Minister also expressed satisfaction at UNESCO’s support in the protection and preservation of six cultural heritage sites in Pakistan and invited UNESCO to partner with Pakistan for enlisting more sites such as the Khewra Salt Mines, it said.

The Khewra Salt Mines, located in Jhelum District of the northeastern Punjab province of Pakistan, constitute the world's second-largest and oldest salt mine, famous for producing pink Himalayan salt.

Discovered by Alexander the Great’s army in 320 BC, this historic site features over 40 km of tunnels.

Sharif also highlighted various initiatives being undertaken by the Government of Pakistan for the promotion of education, particularly the “Education Emergency” that aims to maximize the enrollment of out-of-school children.

As of 2024–2025 data, there are approximately 20 to 26.2 million children (aged 5-16) out of school in Pakistan, representing one of the world's highest numbers of out-of-school children (OOSC).

Director General UNESCO said that he had traveled to various schools and cultural sites in his short visit andappreciated Pakistan’s achievements in the education sector and underscored his continued commitment to support Pakistan’s efforts in the fields of education, science, and culture.
