Clashes End in Kurram, Peace Returns After Ceasefire Agreement

ISLAMABAD - After weeks of intense violence in the Kurram district of Pakistan, peace has returned to the region following a ceasefire agreement brokered between warring factions.

The fighting, which erupted on November 21, after attacked on passengers vans by unidentified gunmen in which around 50 people including women and children lost lives.

The clashes were rooted in long-standing sectarian and land disputes that have simmered in the tribal district, which lies along the Afghanistan border. Armed groups engaged in deadly exchanges, causing widespread fear among civilians. Villages were shelled, homes torched, and families displaced as the violence escalated, prompting urgent calls for intervention. Over 130 people killed during the two week long fighting.

Local leaders, religious clerics, and government representatives spearheaded efforts to mediate a truce. 

The breakthrough came after intensive talks facilitated by tribal elders, with support from the federal and provincial governments. The ceasefire, announced on December 2, included commitments to halt hostilities, resolve disputes through dialogue, and establish a mechanism to prevent future conflicts. Both factions pledged to disarm and respect the rights of local communities, with guarantees from neutral arbitrators to oversee the implementation.

 

In addition to the loss of life, the violence displaced hundreds of families, leaving many without shelter, food, or access to medical care. Local hospitals struggled to treat the injured amid shortages of essential supplies. 

According to local officials, schools and businesses are still closed but expected to reopen soon. While internet service is also expected to restore which was suspended after clashes erupted in the area.
