Strong earthquake of magnitude 6.7 hits northeastern Japan

TOKYO - A strong magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck off the northeastern coast of Japan on Friday, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).

The quake hit at 11:22 UTC at a depth of 43.6 kilometers, with the epicenter located about 49 kilometers east-southeast of Ōfunato in Japan’s Iwate Prefecture on the Pacific coast of the Tohoku region.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or major damage. Japanese authorities continued to monitor the situation, while no tsunami warning had been issued immediately after the quake.
