Massive Protests Erupt in Australia Against Israeli President Isaac Herzog’s Visit

By The South Asia Times

Sydney, Australia - Tens of thousands of demonstrators took to the streets across major Australian cities on Friday to protest the visit of Israeli President Isaac Herzog, demanding his arrest over alleged crimes against Palestinians.

The protests, which began peacefully in Sydney and Melbourne, quickly escalated after heavy-handed police tactics, resulting in dozens of arrests.

Protesters accused Israeli authorities of committing genocide and human rights violations in Palestine, calling for international accountability.

Amid the demonstrations, New South Wales police also disrupted Muslim worshippers performing prayers, an action that sparked widespread condemnation.

The Australia National Imam Council described the police conduct as “shocking, deeply disturbing, and entirely unacceptable,” emphasizing the right to religious freedom even during public protests.

“What we are witnessing is not just a political issue; it is a humanitarian crisis,” said one Sydney protester. “Leaders like Herzog must be held accountable for their crimes.”

The protests reflect growing global outrage over Israel’s policies in the occupied Palestinian territories, with advocacy groups and international observers calling for urgent action to protect civilians and ensure accountability of Israel.

Israeli forces killed over 63,000 innocent Palestinians including women and children in Gaza since 2023.
