Massive fire rips through Tehran’s Jannatabad Market, destroying dozens of shops

By The South Asia Times

TEHRAN - A massive fire tore through the Jannatabad market in western Tehran on Tuesday, sending thick black smoke across large parts of the Iranian capital as firefighters battled to contain the blaze.

Fire crews were dispatched from multiple stations after the fire broke out in the busy commercial area, which is home to dozens of shops and stalls.

State media and officials described the blaze as extensive and visible from various parts of Tehran, prompting emergency services to focus on preventing the fire from spreading to adjacent buildings and residential areas.

Despite the scale of the incident, there were no immediate reports of injuries or fatalities, and authorities were still working to fully extinguish the flames.

Thick plumes of smoke visible on videos shared on social media drew widespread attention as firefighters worked from several directions throughout the afternoon. Local emergency teams urged residents to avoid the area to allow crews to operate safely.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, and officials said investigations would begin once the scene was fully under control. Initial assessments indicated significant material losses as structures within the market were engulfed.

Footage from the scene showed dense smoke drifting over traffic and nearby neighborhoods, highlighting the scale of the incident in the densely populated commercial area.

Authorities continued firefighting efforts into the evening, with efforts concentrated on cooling down the affected structures and preventing further spread.
