Iran's foreign minister speaks with Hamas leader

- Hossein Amir-Abdollahian says he discussed latest developments in Palestine with Ismail Haniyeh

NEW YORK (AA) - Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian discussed the latest situation in Palestine in a phone call Thursday with Ismail Haniyeh, the head of Hamas’s political bureau.

Amir-Abdollahian said on X that they discussed "the latest developments in Gaza and the West Bank."

The two men met Tuesday in Qatar’s capital, Doha.

On Wednesday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan met with Amir-Abdollahian at the presidential palace in Ankara.

The Israeli military has expanded its air and ground attacks in Gaza, which has been under relentless airstrikes since the Palestinian group Hamas launched a cross-border attack on Oct. 7.

Nearly 10,600 people have since been killed in the conflict, including at least 9,061 Palestinians.

Basic supplies are running low for Gaza’s 2.3 million residents due to Israel's "full siege," in addition to the large number of casualties and displacements.
