Iranian top diplomat meets Pakistan Army Chief as Islamabad gears up for possible US-Iran talks

By The South Asia Times

ISLAMABAD - Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi met with Pakistan Army Chief and Chief of Defense Forces, Field Marshal Asim Munir, in Islamabad, the Iranian embassy said, as diplomatic activity intensifies ahead of a possible second round of talks between Iran and the United States.

The meeting was also attended by Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, the director general of the ISI, and Iranian ambassador to Pakistan Reza Amiri Moghadam, according to officials.

Araghchi, who arrived in Islamabad late Friday, is scheduled to hold further talks with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar during his visit.

A U.S. delegation is also expected to arrive later on Saturday, with Pakistan facilitating efforts for renewed engagement between Tehran and Washington. Iranian media have indicated that any negotiations would likely be indirect, with Araghchi not expected to meet U.S. officials face-to-face.

The flurry of meetings underscores Islamabad’s growing role as a mediator as both sides explore diplomatic options to ease tensions and advance peace talks.
