Iran says US peace deal to be signed digitally in 'next few days' as Trump announces 'great settlement'

By The South Asia Times

TEHRAN – Iran's Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi announced Friday that a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the United States to end the ongoing war could be signed within days, as both sides finalize what President Donald Trump has called a "great settlement."

In an interview with state-run IRIB TV, Araghchi explained that once finalized, the agreement will be signed digitally by both parties in their respective countries before being publicly announced.

The deal would commit both nations to refrain from initiating any further hostilities. A second phase of negotiations, scheduled within a 60-day period, would then focus on Iran's nuclear program and the removal of sanctions.

Tehran insists that the only acceptable approach to its stockpile of highly enriched uranium will be to dilute it within Iranian territory, Araghchi stressed.

According to the Iranian foreign minister, the potential agreement includes provisions for ending the war on all fronts, including Lebanon, and would require Israel to withdraw from occupied areas.

The MoU also provides for the reopening of the strategic Strait of Hormuz, the full lifting of the US naval blockade against Iran, and the release of Iran's frozen assets abroad.

On the Strait of Hormuz, Araghchi noted that its management "will definitely not return to the pre-war era." While Iran will retain sovereignty and a military presence, a legal system consistent with international law will be established. He ruled out tolls for passage but said service fees would be "reasonable."

President Trump said Thursday that the United States had "just made a great settlement of the war with Iran," with an agreement expected "over the next few days." The breakthrough follows weeks of intense mediation efforts by Pakistan.
