Indonesia Finds Debris of Missing Aircraft Carrying 11 People

By The South Asia Times

JAKARTA -Indonesian authorities on Sunday discovered debris believed to be from an aircraft that went missing a day earlier while carrying 11 people, state news agency ANTARA reported.

The ATR 42-500, operated by Indonesia Air Transport, lost contact on Saturday in Maros district, South Sulawesi province, while flying from Yogyakarta to Makassar, the provincial capital. The plane was carrying eight crew members and three passengers.

The Indonesian Air Force identified the crash site in the Mount Bulusaraung area of South Sulawesi, prompting the deployment of Rapid Response Force Corps (Korpasgat) personnel supported by helicopters.

“Following the findings, the Air Force immediately deployed five Korpasgat soldiers along with one personnel from the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) using an H225M Caracal helicopter to the site,” said Air Marshal I Nyoman Suadnyana, head of the Air Force Information Service.

He added that rescue teams began preparing initial evacuation measures upon arrival. Ground teams, aided by local residents, continue search and evacuation efforts as authorities work to determine the cause of the incident.
