Pakistan govt announces further treatment for Imran Khan after nationwide protests

By The South Asia Times

ISLAMABAD - Pakistan’s government has announced further medical treatment for incarcerated former Prime Minister Imran Khan following widespread public reaction over his reported eye condition.

In a statement on Saturday posted on X, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said that, pursuant to Khan’s ongoing eye treatment, further check-ups and care would be conducted at a specialized medical facility by leading eye specialists. He added that a detailed medical report would also be submitted to the Supreme Court.

“Conjecture, speculations and efforts to turn this into political rhetoric and mileage for vested interests may please be avoided,” Tarar said.

The statement came after nationwide protests by supporters of Khan, who has been in custody for months.

Opposition lawmakers staged a sit-in at Parliament House from Friday, while the Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and cabinet members also held peaceful demonstrations in Islamabad on Friday and Saturday.

Earlier, a report submitted to the Supreme Court of Pakistan stated that Khan had allegedly lost 85% of the vision in one eye, reportedly due to delayed medical treatment in jail.

The report triggered anger among his supporters, who took to the streets in large numbers across the country.

The government has not commented on the allegations of negligence but says it is ensuring that Khan receives proper medical care in line with legal requirements.
