Dubai - In what analysts are calling a potential game-changer in modern aerial warfare, an American F-35 stealth fighter jet was forced to make an emergency landing at a US air base in the Middle East after being struck by what is believed to be Iranian fire, according to a CNN report citing two sources familiar with the matter.

If confirmed, the incident would mark the first time in military history that Iran—or any adversary—has successfully struck an American F-35 fighter jet in combat.

The fifth-generation stealth aircraft was "flying a combat mission over Iran" when it sustained damage and diverted to a US base in the region, US Central Command spokesperson Capt. Tim Hawkins confirmed.

"The aircraft landed safely, and the pilot is in stable condition," Hawkins said. "This incident is under investigation".

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) immediately claimed credit, announcing that its Aerospace Force air defense systems had targeted the jet at approximately 2:50 a.m. local time over central Iran. In a statement, the IRGC said the aircraft was "struck and seriously damaged," adding that there was a "high possibility" the jet may have crashed, a claim the US has not confirmed.

- A 'world first.'

Military analysts are describing the incident as unprecedented.

"This would be the first time in a military conflict that Iran has successfully struck a US aircraft," CNN explicitly noted in its reporting.

The F-35 Lightning II, developed by Lockheed Martin at a cost exceeding $100 million per aircraft, is widely regarded as the most advanced combat jet in service, designed specifically to evade radar and operate in heavily contested environments.

Iranian state media circulated footage purportedly showing a missile striking an aerial target, with captions calling it a "world first" . The IRGC linked the success to recent improvements in Iran's integrated air defense network, claiming the operation followed the interception of more than 125 US and Israeli drones.

Defense analysts point to the profound implications of the incident. The F-35's entire design philosophy centers on low-observability, stealth technology meant to defeat precisely the kind of air defense systems Iran operates.

"The F-35 is built to evade detection," noted one analysis. "If Iranian air defenses successfully tracked and hit one, it raises serious questions about the aircraft's performance in high-threat environments, or suggests Iran has developed capabilities previously unknown".

The F-35 incident follows other US aviation losses in the conflict, though not all due to enemy action. Three F-15E Strike Eagle jets were previously downed by friendly fire involving Kuwaiti air defenses, and a KC-135 refueling aircraft crashed in western Iraq, killing all six crew members.

However, Iranian forces have successfully destroyed multiple US unmanned aerial vehicles, including at least 11 MQ-9 Reaper drones shot down by Iranian air defenses.
