Pakistan bound by strategic defense pact with Saudi Arabia, top diplomat Dar says amid regional tensions

ISLAMABAD - Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has reaffirmed Islamabad’s commitment to its strategic mutual defense agreement with Saudi Arabia, saying the pact is sovereign in nature and binding on both sides.

Speaking at the Senate of Pakistan about recent regional tensions, Dar said the agreement with Riyadh is well known internationally and shapes Pakistan’s diplomatic engagements during times of crisis.

“We have a strategic mutual defense agreement with Saudi Arabia. The whole world is aware of it; it's a sovereign agreement, and we are bound by it,” he said.

Dar explained that, keeping the agreement in mind, he immediately reached out to Iranian leaders while he was in Saudi Arabia to communicate Pakistan’s position and concerns. He urged Tehran to take the defense understanding between Islamabad and Riyadh into consideration amid the escalating conflict.

According to the foreign minister, Iranian officials sought specific assurances -- particularly that Saudi territory would not be used to launch attacks against Iran. Dar said he conveyed and secured those assurances.

“They requested certain assurances, specifically asking me to inform them that their soil should not be used for any attacks. I secured and provided those assurances,” he said.

Dar added that subsequent developments appeared to reflect a measured response toward Saudi Arabia and Oman, compared with reported military activity involving Jordan, Kuwait, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Bahrain.

“Alhamdulillah, you observed that there was minimal reaction against Saudi Arabia and Oman,” Dar said, suggesting that diplomatic efforts may have helped prevent a broader escalation involving those states.
