China welcomes US President Trump ahead of high-stakes Xi summit in Beijing

By The South Asia Times

BEIJING — China on Wednesday welcomed the upcoming visit of US President Donald Trump, saying Beijing hopes the two countries can strengthen ties based on “respect, equality, and mutual benefit” as Trump travels to China for talks with President Xi Jinping.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said diplomacy between the two leaders plays an “irreplaceable role” in guiding relations between the world’s two largest economies, according to Anadolu Agency.

Trump is expected to arrive in China on Thursday for a three-day state visit, his first trip to the country as a sitting U.S. president in nearly nine years. During the visit, he will hold talks with Xi on a range of issues, including trade tensions, Taiwan, artificial intelligence and the ongoing Middle East crisis.

Beijing said the summit is expected to provide “more stability and certainty” to the international community amid growing geopolitical tensions.

Ahead of the visit, Trump said he would urge Xi to further open China’s market to American businesses, calling such a move highly beneficial for both countries.

Several top US business executives are accompanying Trump on the trip, though First Lady Melania Trump is not part of the delegation.
