China says stable military ties with US serve global peace

BEIJING - China’s Defense Ministry said on Monday that stable military-to-military relations between Beijing and Washington are in the shared interests of both countries and are also expected by the international community, according to a report by the state-run Global Times.

Speaking at a regular press briefing, Chinese Defense Ministry spokesperson Jiang Bin said China is prepared to work with the United States to implement the consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries and promote the long-term development of bilateral military relations.

“The steady development of the military-to-military relationship between China and the US is in the shared interests of both sides and is also the common expectation of the international community,” Jiang said.

He added that Beijing is willing to strengthen communication and dialogue with Washington while respecting each other’s “core interests and major concerns.”

According to Jiang, both sides should work to manage differences, build mutual trust and reduce misunderstandings in order to keep military relations “stable and positive” and moving “along the right track.”

The Chinese official said improved military engagement between the world’s two largest powers could contribute to broader bilateral relations and help safeguard global peace and stability.

The remarks come amid ongoing efforts by Beijing and Washington to stabilize ties following years of tensions over trade, Taiwan, the South China Sea and military activities in the Asia-Pacific region.

Recent high-level contacts between Chinese and US officials have signaled attempts by both sides to maintain communication channels and avoid direct confrontation despite continuing strategic competition.
