No way for Taiwan to join UN, says Chinese envoy

By Islamuddin Sajid

ANKARA (AA) – The Chinese permanent representative to the United Nations said that seeking foreign support to get independence by Taiwan is a "dead end," state-run media reported on Friday.

In a statement, Zhang Jun strongly reacted to Taiwan’s move to submit a joint letter to the UN secretary-general through its allies that urged him "to rectify the UN’s erroneous interpretation of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) Resolution 2,758 and said it will not succeed.

"The so-called Taiwan’s participation in the UN is a false narrative through and through, as there is only one China in the world and Taiwan is an inalienable part of Chinese territory," state-run Global Times quoted Zhang as saying.

"The so-called Taiwan’s participation in the UN will not succeed; whatever tricks are employed, seeking foreign support to gain independence is a dead end and the plot to use Taiwan to contain China is doomed to fail," he added.

Last week, the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning also strongly reacted to the reports and said: "There can only be one seat representing China at the UN.”
