Death toll rises to 82 in China's Shanxi coal mine gas explosion

By The South Asia Times

BEIJING - The death toll from a gas explosion at a coal mine in northern China's Shanxi Province has risen to 82, authorities confirmed Saturday.

The blast occurred at the Liushenyu coal mine in Qinyuan County at 7:29 p.m. on Friday, according to Xinhua News citing local officials.

Rescue efforts remain ongoing, though no further details about survivors or the cause of the explosion have been released immediately.

The incident marks one of the deadliest mining disasters in China in recent years. Shanxi Province is a major coal-producing region, and mine safety violations have led to repeated deadly accidents despite government crackdowns.

Further updates are expected as rescue operations continue.
