Two Police lost their lives in suicide bombing in Punjab province of Pakistan

By The South Asia Times

ISLAMABAD -  A suicide bomber targeted a police border check post in northeastern Punjab province of Pakistan on Tuesday evening, killing two officers and injuring four others, including civilians, officials said, marking the third suicide attack in the country within a week.

A local police official told The South Asia Times that the attacker detonated explosives at the Dajal check post in Bhakkar district of Punjab province while police personnel were on duty.

Two officers were killed instantly, while four others, including one police personnel, two polio workers stationed at the post, and one driver, were wounded and shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Security forces cordoned off the area and launched a search operation to determine whether the bomber had accomplices.

The attack follows a surge in suicide bombings across Pakistan. Last week in Bajaur district, 11 security personnel lost their lives when an explosives-laden vehicle struck a security post; 12 militants were also killed in subsequent operations.

In Bannu, in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, a senior army officer and a soldier lost their lives in another suicide attack. In southwestern Balochistan province, security forces said they shot dead a suicide bomber in Pishin district before he could reach his target.

Pakistan’s northwestern and southwestern regions have seen a sharp rise in violence in recent months. Islamabad has accused the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) of launching attacks from sanctuaries in neighboring Afghanistan.

On Saturday night, Pakistan said it carried out strikes on TTP hideouts in three Afghan provinces, claiming around 80 militants were killed.
