Australia to invest $1 billion in Great Barrier Reef protection project in next 9 years, PM Scott Morrison says

 

CANBERRA (TSAT) - Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison on Friday announced that his country will invest $1 billion in next decade to protect the Great Barrier Reef.

 

In a statement, issued from his office, Morrison said with the new fund the total investment in under the Reef 2050 Plan will now raise to over $3 billion.

 

“We are backing the health of the reef and the economic future of tourism operators, hospitality providers and Queensland communities that are at the heart of the reef economy,” Prime Minister Morrison said.

 

“This is already the best managed reef in the world and today we take our commitment to a new level.”

 

According to the premier, the investment will also help and support over 64,000 Queenslanders which are the back bone of the Reef economy.

 

The reef is being listed as “in danger” by the UNISCO world heritage committee and earlier the committee requested the Australian government to take measures and protect it.

 

According to the Australian Prime Minister under the new fund $579.9 million will invest for water quality, $252.9 million for reef management and conservation, $92.7 million for research, $74.4 million for Traditional Owner and community-led projects including species protection, habitat restoration, citizen science programs and marine debris, according to the statement.
