Pakistan warns Afghanistan risks becoming ‘worse than pre-9/11’ haven for terror groups

By The South Asia Times

ISLAMABAD -  Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari has issued a stark warning that conditions under the Afghan Taliban resemble -- and may even exceed -- those that existed before the September 9/11 attacks, cautioning that militant safe havens threaten regional and global security.

In a strongly worded statement released Sunday, President Asif Ali Zardari thanked world leaders and international organizations for their solidarity following the recent terrorist attack in Islamabad, while urging a unified global response to extremism.

Zardari said the wave of condolences had provided comfort to grieving families and reinforced the idea that combating terrorism is a shared international responsibility rather than a burden any single country can shoulder alone.

Drawing on Pakistan’s long experience with militancy, the president warned that terrorist networks often thrive when given “space, facilitation, or impunity” beyond national borders, with civilians ultimately paying the price worldwide.

He expressed particular concern about developments in neighboring Afghanistan, stating that the Taliban-led administration has “created conditions similar to or worse than pre-9/11,” when extremist groups were able to organize attacks that reshaped global security.

The Pakistani leader also alleged that militant elements continue to operate from Afghan territory against Pakistan, adding that external actors are providing financial, technical, and military support to such groups. He further warned that Pakistan’s eastern neighbor was assisting the Taliban regime, posing risks not only to Pakistan but to broader regional and international peace.

Despite the heightened rhetoric, Zardari emphasized Pakistan’s appreciation for the global community’s support during what he described as a difficult moment for the country. He said international backing strengthens Islamabad’s determination to work with partners to promote stability and bring an end to terrorism in all its forms.

Pakistan has repeatedly called for greater international coordination against militant networks, arguing that unchecked extremism in one region can quickly evolve into a global threat. The president’s remarks underscore growing security concerns in South Asia as Islamabad seeks stronger cooperation to counter cross-border militancy.
