ASEAN expresses ‘serious concern’ over Middle East escalation, urges immediate ceasefire and respect for UN Charter

By The South Asia Times

MANILA - Foreign ministers of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) have expressed serious concern over the escalating conflict in the Middle East, calling for an immediate halt to hostilities, maximum restraint by all parties, and full respect for international law, including the Charter of the United Nations.

In a statement on Wednesday, ASEAN top diplomats said it was closely monitoring developments following attacks launched by Israel and the United States against Iran on February 28, 2026, and the subsequent retaliatory strikes by Iran against several countries in the region.

According to the statement, Iranian retaliation targeted the Kingdom of Bahrain, Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, State of Kuwait, Sultanate of Oman, State of Qatar, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Syrian Arab Republic and the United Arab Emirates.

ASEAN warned that the intensifying confrontation poses a grave threat to civilian lives and undermines regional and global peace and stability. The bloc urged all countries to respect international law, including the Charter of the United Nations.

The group described the escalation as particularly regrettable because it occurred amid ongoing diplomatic initiatives, including mediation efforts led by Oman aimed at securing a negotiated solution.

Emphasizing the urgency of de-escalation, ASEAN called for an immediate cessation of hostilities and urged all parties to exercise maximum restraint. The ministers appealed for disputes to be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy in the interest of maintaining regional stability.

The statement reaffirmed the obligation of all states to settle differences peacefully and to respect sovereignty and territorial integrity in accordance with international law and relevant UN Security Council resolutions. It also stressed the responsibility of all parties in armed conflicts to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure.
