A War of Choice': Iranian FM says Rubio admitted US attacked Iran for Israel as death toll reaches 555

By The South Asia Times

TEHRAN -  Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi slammed Washington on Tuesday and said US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had "admitted" the United States entered "a war of choice on behalf of Israel" -- a charge that comes as the Iranian death toll from four days of US-Israeli strikes has climbed to 555 .

"Mr. Rubio admitted what we all knew: US has entered a war of choice on behalf of Israel," Araghchi posted on the social media platform X. "There was never any so-called Iranian 'threat.'"

The Iranian foreign minister argued that "both American and Iranian blood is thus on Israel Firsters," urging US citizens to "take back their country" because they "deserve better."

Rubio told reporters Monday that Washington launched strikes on Iran after learning that ally Israel was preparing to act and amid concerns Tehran would retaliate against American forces in the region.

"We knew that there was going to be an Israeli action. We knew that that would precipitate an attack against American forces, and we knew that if we didn't preemptively go after them before they launched those attacks, we would suffer higher casualties," Rubio said.

The Secretary of State maintained that, regardless of the sequence of events, President Donald Trump's administration believed action against Iran was necessary. "No matter what, ultimately this operation needed to happen," Rubio stated.

While Rubio acknowledged Washington would prefer to see an end to what he termed the Khamenei establishment, he stressed that regime change was not the declared aim of the current military operation.

According to the Iranian Red Crescent Society, at least 555 people have been killed in US and Israeli strikes against Iran since Saturday morning. The organization stated that 131 Iranian counties were targeted in the attacks, with more than 100,000 rescuers on full alert across the country.

US Central Command announced Monday that eight US service members have been killed in action, recovering the remains of two previously unaccounted-for personnel from a facility struck during Iran's initial retaliatory attacks.
