Army Chief Warns of Multi-Domain Threats, Calls for Constant Vigilance Against Proxy Warfare

By The South Asia Times

Rawalpindi: Army Chief and Chief of Defence Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir on Tuesday warned that Pakistan faces complex and persistent security challenges across multiple domains, stressing the need for comprehensive preparedness, continuous adaptation and close synergy among all elements of national power.

According to ISPR, the army chief made these remarks during a visit to the National Defence University (NDU) in Islamabad, where he was briefed by panels of civil and military participants of the ongoing National Security and War Course on their academic assessment of national security challenges and ways to address them.

In his interaction, Field Marshal Asim Munir outlined the evolving global, regional and internal security environment, noting that contemporary threats span conventional and sub-conventional warfare, intelligence, cyber and information operations, as well as military and economic domains. He emphasized that addressing these challenges requires a whole-of-nation approach and integrated multi-domain readiness.

Highlighting changing patterns of conflict, the army chief said hostile elements increasingly rely on indirect and ambiguous methods, including the use of proxies to exploit internal fault lines rather than engaging in overt confrontation. He underscored the importance of preparing future leaders to recognize, anticipate and counter such layered and cognitive challenges.

The army chief further stressed that decision-making under uncertainty, coupled with clarity of thought and intellectual resilience, is critical for operating effectively in today’s contested security environment.

Praising NDU’s role as a premier institution for strategic learning, Field Marshal Asim Munir said professional military education remains central to building institutional capacity, fostering indigenous capabilities and ensuring long-term national resilience.

Concluding his address, he appreciated the panels’ analysis and urged participants to remain vigilant, adaptive and steadfast in upholding the values of integrity, discipline and selfless service. Upon arrival, the army chief was received by the President of NDU.
