Iran's top security adviser, Ali Larijani assassinated amid escalating Iran–US–Israel conflict

By The South Asia Times

TEHRAN - Iran's top security adviser and influential leader, Ali Larijani, has been assassinated by Israel in recent airstrikes, Iranian state-run Press TV confirmed.

In a statement released late Tuesday, Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) announced the death of its secretary, Ali Larijani, describing him as having “ascended to martyrdom” during what it called ongoing American-Israeli aggression.

The statement said Larijani was killed alongside his son, Mortaza Larijani, senior security official Alireza Bayat, and several bodyguards.

The SNSC Secretariat portrayed Larijani’s death as the fulfillment of a long-held personal aspiration, praising his decades-long role in advancing Iran’s political and strategic interests.

It emphasized his calls for unity in the face of external threats, adding that his death would strengthen national resolve.

Larijani was a prominent figure in Iran’s political establishment, having served as speaker of parliament for over a decade and holding senior advisory roles within the system shaped by the late Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei. He was also a member of the Expediency Council and previously led the country’s state broadcasting organization.

Iranian authorities link the current escalation to what they describe as an “unprovoked and illegal” campaign that began on February 28, which they say included the assassination of Khamenei and several high-ranking military commanders.

Since then, Iranian forces have launched dozens of retaliatory strikes against US and Israeli-linked targets across the region. Officials in Tehran have vowed to continue their response until what they describe as the “complete defeat” of their adversaries.

The situation remains fluid, with independent confirmation of key claims still limited and tensions across the region at a critical level.
