Afghan Taliban target civilians in northwestern Pakistan: 9 killed, dozen injured

By The South Asia Times

ISLAMABAD — Pakistan’s Information Minister Attaullah Tarar has accused the Afghan Taliban of deliberately targeting civilians in northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province near the Afghan border, saying the attacks had killed at least nine people and injured a dozen more.

In a statement, Tarar said the victims in Bajaur district included six women and children, describing the incident as an “inhuman and insidious” act reflecting disregard for human life. He cited a report from local authorities which said 12 others, including women and a minor, were wounded in the attack.

The minister further alleged that elements linked to the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan, which he described as “Indian-backed proxies” often referred to as “Fitna al Khwarij,” were involved in the assault.

He said that in a separate incident on Saturday, three civilians were injured while playing cricket after being targeted by a quadcopter, blaming the same militant network.

Tarar rejected allegations from Kabul that Pakistani forces target civilians, insisting that operations by Pakistan are aimed solely at militant infrastructure with efforts to avoid collateral damage.

Tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan have risen in recent months, particularly since February, when Pakistan stepped up strikes against suspected hideouts of the TTP inside Afghan territory. Islamabad says militants operate from sanctuaries across the border, a claim denied by Afghan authorities.

Violence has increased in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, with the TTP frequently targeting security forces and civilians, further straining already fragile ties between the two neighbors.
