War Is 'Not a Show': World Leaders Reject Trump's Erratic Diplomacy as Iran Conflict Widens

Berlin and Paris signal growing fatigue with U.S. President’s shifting positions, as European leaders call for de-escalation, not military force.

By The South Asia Times

PARIS/BERLIN - Global patience with President Donald Trump is wearing thin, as allies increasingly dismiss his threats and contradictions as a “recurring phenomenon” rather than a reliable policy.

Asked about Trump’s latest criticisms of NATO and his suggestion that the United States might walk away from the treaty, a spokesman for German Chancellor Friedrich Merz responded dismissively: “This isn’t the first time he’s done this. And since it’s a recurring phenomenon, you can probably judge the consequences for yourself,” ABC News reported.

But the most striking shift has come from French President Emmanuel Macron, long regarded as the ultimate “Trump-whisperer.” Following Trump’s comments about NATO and an offensive remark about Macron’s wife, the French leader struck a sharply different tone in Seoul on Thursday.

“There is too much talk, and it’s all over the place,” Macron told reporters. “We all need stability, calm, a return to peace -- this isn’t a show!”

He insisted that the focus should not be on using force to open the Strait of Hormuz but on “work towards de-escalation” in the Middle East and a ceasefire. “We are talking about war, about men and women in combat, about civilians being killed,” he added.

The shift had real consequences. A 41-nation virtual meeting chaired by the UK -- originally meant to appease Trump over the Strait of Hormuz -- ended with a clear consensus: no involvement in the Strait until a ceasefire is achieved.
