Trump renews media attacks, echoing longstanding slurs with US journalists

By The South Asia Times

WASHINGTON - US President Donald Trump has intensified his criticism of media figures, targeting journalists and commentators in a fresh post on Truth Social—a continuation of his long-running confrontations with the press.

In the post, Trump criticized Shannon Bream for what he described as failing to challenge Democratic voices, singling out Jake Auchincloss. He also urged executives at Fox News to remove commentator Jessica Tarlov, using sharp and personal language.

The remarks mirror Trump’s broader history of public disputes with journalists, particularly from networks such as CNN. During his presidency, he frequently labeled the outlet as “fake news” and clashed with its correspondents in high-profile press briefings.

One notable example occurred in 2018 when Trump had a tense exchange with Jim Acosta during a White House press conference. After Acosta pressed the president on migration policies, Trump interrupted him, calling his questions “rude” and refusing to continue the exchange. The confrontation escalated to the point where Acosta’s press credentials were temporarily revoked before being reinstated following legal action.

Similar confrontations were a recurring feature of Trump-era briefings, where he often cut off reporters who asked challenging questions, dismissed critical coverage, or redirected questions to more favorable outlets. At times, he publicly rebuked journalists in the briefing room, reinforcing his combative approach to media scrutiny.

Analysts say Trump’s latest comments reflect a consistent communication strategy—one that frames critical journalism as biased while mobilizing support among his political base. Supporters argue he is holding media accountable, while critics say the rhetoric undermines press freedom and democratic norms.

The renewed attacks highlight the enduring tension between Trump and major news organizations, a dynamic that continues to shape political discourse in the United States.

  • Warning to journalists to reveal sources

Meanwhile, Trump threatened to jail a journalist over a leak about a missing American airman, saying media outlets could face consequences if they refused to reveal their sources, according to CNN.

Speaking at a White House press conference, he argued that the report compromised sensitive rescue operations following a downed U.S. fighter jet over Iran.

Trump warned that journalists involved could be forced to disclose information under national security grounds or face imprisonment.

The incident has raised fresh concerns about press freedom and the administration’s handling of classified information.
