Philippines Declares State of National Calamity as Typhoon Kalmaegi (Tino) Leaves 114 Dead, 127 Missing

By The South Asia Times

MANILA - Philippines President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has declared a state of national calamity following the devastation caused by Typhoon Tino — internationally known as Typhoon Kalmaegi  — which has left at least 114 people dead and 127 others missing across several regions in the Philippines.

The declaration, approved during a briefing at the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) headquarters, aims to expedite rescue, relief, and rehabilitation operations while mobilizing government and private resources.

President Marcos said the hardest-hit areas include Cebu, Negros, Iloilo, and parts of MIMAROPA and Eastern Visayas, where thousands remain displaced. The government has allocated ₱760 million in financial assistance to affected provinces to speed up relief operations and recovery.

“With such widespread damage and more regions at risk from incoming Typhoon Uwan, declaring a national calamity allows us to act faster and provide immediate support,” Marcos said.

The President assured that search and rescue operations continue in devastated areas while the government braces for Uwan’s expected landfall in Northern Luzon. “We will not leave Cebu and other affected regions until recovery is well underway,” he added.
