US launches high-risk rescue mission to recover downed airman inside Iran

By The South Asia Times

Washington/Tehran -  The United States carried out a high-stakes rescue operation deep inside Iran to recover an injured airman after his F-15E Strike Eagle was shot down, according to a report by CNN.

The weapons systems officer survived for more than 24 hours behind enemy lines, hiding in mountainous terrain and evading Iranian forces despite injuries sustained during ejection. Equipped with limited gear, including a pistol and communication device, he maneuvered through rugged terrain and reached elevations of around 7,000 feet while avoiding capture.

US officials said a large-scale rescue effort involving special operations forces and intelligence personnel was launched to retrieve him. The mission included air support, with US aircraft conducting strikes to secure the area as commandos moved in.

The operation also involved a reported deception effort by intelligence agencies to mislead Iranian forces searching for the downed airman. During the mission, two US special operations aircraft were damaged and later destroyed on the ground.

US President Donald Trump confirmed the rescue, calling it “one of the most daring search and rescue operations” in US history.

Iranian state media later released images of wreckage in Isfahan province, though details about the aircraft remain unclear.

The incident comes amid heightened tensions, as the US and Iran continue to trade military actions, raising concerns about further escalation in the region.
