Russia and Iran Condemn US Military Action Against Venezuela, Call for Respect of Sovereignty

By The South Asia Times

MOSCOW/TEHRAN Russia and Iran have strongly condemned the United States’ reported military operation in Venezuela, calling it a violation of international law and an attack on the sovereignty of the independent nation.

In a statement released Saturday, the Russian Foreign Ministry expressed “extreme concern” over reports that President Nicolás Maduro and his wife were forcibly flown out of Venezuela during the US strike. The ministry demanded immediate clarification, warning that if true, the action would constitute an “unacceptable violation of the sovereignty of an independent state, the respect for which is a fundamental principle of international law.”

The statement criticized the justifications put forward by Washington as lacking factual basis, arguing that ideological hostility has outweighed pragmatic approaches and efforts to build trust-based relationships. Russia emphasized the need to prevent further escalation and urged all parties to resolve grievances through dialogue. The ministry reaffirmed solidarity with the Venezuelan people and support for the Bolivarian leadership in safeguarding national interests.

The Russian Embassy in Caracas said operations continue normally, with ongoing contact with Venezuelan authorities and Russian nationals in the country. No Russian citizens have been reported injured.

Meanwhile, Iran’s Foreign Ministry issued a similar statement, calling the US strike a “flagrant violation” of Venezuela’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. The ministry described the attack as an “act of aggression” and a breach of the United Nations Charter, which prohibits the use of force against sovereign states.

Both countries also expressed support for calls by Venezuelan authorities and Latin American leaders for an urgent UN Security Council meeting to address the crisis.

The statements highlight growing international alarm over Washington’s unilateral actions in Latin America, reinforcing criticism that the United States is disregarding global norms in pursuit of strategic objectives.
