Pakistan says 13 militants killed in northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa operations near Afghan border

By The South Asia Times

ISLAMABAD - Pakistan’s military said on Wednesday that security forces killed 13 suspected militants in two separate intelligence-based operations in the northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province near the Afghan border.

In a statement, the military’s media wing, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), said 10 militants were killed during an operation in the Bara area of Khyber District after an “intense fire exchange.” A second operation in Bannu District resulted in the killing of three more militants.

The ISPR described the militants as “khwarij” and linked them to what it called “Indian proxy” elements.

The military said follow-up “sanitization operations” are underway to clear the area of any remaining fighters, adding that the campaign is part of a broader counterterrorism push under the government-backed initiative “Azm-e-Istehkam.”

Militant violence has surged in recent years in Pakistan’s border regions, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and neighboring areas. Authorities often blame the banned Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) for attacks targeting security forces and civilians, while also alleging cross-border safe havens, claims that have been denied by Afghan Taliban authorities.

Pakistan says its security forces and law enforcement agencies will continue operations “at full pace” to eliminate what it describes as foreign-sponsored militancy from the country.
