Pakistan, Saudi defense chiefs meet after Iranian attacks on kingdom

By The South Asia Times

RIYADH - Senior defense officials from Pakistan and Saudi Arabia met on Saturday to discuss security cooperation following recent Iranian attacks on the kingdom, amid rising tensions in the region.

Saudi Defense Minister Khalid bin Salman said he held talks with Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defense Forces, Asim Munir, focusing on the latest Iranian strikes and possible responses under the countries’ Joint Strategic Defense Agreement.

In a post on X, Khalid said the two sides discussed measures needed to halt the attacks and stressed that such actions undermine regional security and stability.

He added that both countries hope Iran will act with wisdom and avoid miscalculation.

The meeting came after Iranian ballistic missiles reportedly struck the Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia, a major facility used by the United States in the Gulf region, as Tehran continues targeting US and Israeli assets in the region amid escalating hostilities.

P

akistan and Saudi Arabia maintain close defense ties, including a strategic security pact. A day earlier, Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar said attacks on Saudi Arabia would be considered attacks on Pakistan under their defense agreement.

Iran has meanwhile sought assurances that Saudi territory would not be used for military operations against it as tensions continue to mount across the region.
