Pakistan, Saudi Arabia Sign Mutual Defense Pact As Attack On One Would Consider on Both

By The South Asia Times

Riyadh — Pakistan and Saudi Arabia on Wednesday signed a landmark defense agreement pledging that any attack on either nation would be considered an attack on both, in a move aimed at strengthening joint deterrence and regional security.

The “Strategic Mutual Defense Agreement” was concluded during Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s state visit to the kingdom, where he held talks with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman at Al-Yamamah Palace in Riyadh, according to a joint statement issued after the meeting.

The pact comes against the backdrop of heightened regional tensions following a September 9 Israeli airstrike in Qatar’s capital targeting Hamas members, which killed six people.

Building on nearly eight decades of close partnership, the agreement commits both sides to deepen defense cooperation, bolster joint deterrence against aggression, and enhance peace and stability in the region.

“The agreement reflects the shared commitment of both nations to strengthen their security and to contribute to peace in the region and the world,” the joint statement said.

Sharif expressed gratitude to the Saudi leadership for their warm hospitality and reaffirmed Pakistan’s longstanding solidarity with the kingdom. The Crown Prince, in turn, extended best wishes to the Pakistani people, underscoring the deep brotherly ties binding the two nations.
