North Korea fires multiple ballistic missiles as Seoul calls emergency security meeting

By The South Asia Times

SEOUL - North Korea fired multiple short-range ballistic missiles toward the East Sea on Wednesday morning, South Korea’s military said, marking a sharp escalation in tensions following days of mixed diplomatic signals and military activity on the Korean Peninsula.

According to the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the missiles were launched from the Wonsan area at around 8:50 a.m. and flew approximately 240 kilometers. It is North Korea’s fourth confirmed ballistic missile launch this year, according to Yonhap News.

The JCS said South Korean and U.S. intelligence authorities are closely tracking the situation and sharing real-time information. “Our military is closely monitoring North Korea’s various movements under a robust South Korea–U.S. combined defense posture,” it said, adding that forces remain ready to respond to any provocation in an “overwhelming manner.”

The launch came just a day after an unidentified projectile was fired from the vicinity of Pyongyang, which reportedly failed shortly after launch and remains under analysis by intelligence agencies.

Tensions were already heightened after South Korean President Lee Jae Myung expressed regret over civilian drone flights into North Korea, saying they had contributed to unnecessary military friction. His remarks followed legal action against individuals accused of sending drones across the border in recent months.

Hours after the missile launches, the powerful sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, Kim Yo-jong, acknowledged Seoul’s “frank and broad-minded” tone but warned South Korea to halt what she called reckless provocations and avoid actions that worsen tensions.

In response, the Office of National Security at Cheong Wa Dae held an emergency meeting attended by defense and intelligence officials. It described the missile launches as a violation of U.N. Security Council resolutions and called on Pyongyang to immediately stop such actions.

Officials also instructed enhanced military readiness, citing rising global instability, including ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

North Korea has not issued any official statement on the latest launches, maintaining its silence amid mounting regional and international concern.
