SEOUL - North Korea fired around 10 ballistic missiles toward the East Sea on Saturday, according to the Joint Chiefs of Staff, in the latest show of force as the United States and South Korea conduct their annual joint military exercises.

The missiles were detected at around 1:20 p.m. local time after being launched from the Sunan area near the North Korean capital, Pyongyang, Yonhap News reported.

South Korea’s military said it is maintaining a high level of readiness and closely sharing information with Washington and Japan amid concerns about possible additional launches.

The test coincides with the ongoing Freedom Shield drills, an 11-day joint exercise between US and South Korean forces that began earlier this week. North Korea has long condemned the exercises as rehearsals for an invasion, while Seoul and Washington insist they are defensive in nature.

Earlier this week, Kim Yo‑jong, the influential sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong‑un, warned that the drills could bring “unimaginably terrible consequences.” North Korea has also recently test-fired strategic cruise missiles from the Choe Hyon destroyer, with its leader stressing the need to strengthen the country’s nuclear deterrent.

The launch comes amid diplomatic speculation after South Korean Prime Minister Kim Min‑seok said US President Donald Trump remains open to resuming dialogue with Kim Jong-un. Reports suggest Trump may seek a meeting with the North Korean leader during a possible visit to China for talks with President Xi Jinping in the coming weeks.

North Korea last conducted a similar test on Jan. 27, when it fired multiple short-range ballistic missiles toward the East Sea, which Pyongyang said was part of a test of a large-caliber multiple rocket launcher system.
