Pakistan records deadliest month of 2026 as militant violence claims 606 lives: Report

ISLAMABAD - Pakistan recorded its deadliest month of 2026 in July, with at least 606 people killed and 232 injured as militant attacks and counterterrorism operations intensified across the country, according to a monthly security assessment released on Saturday by the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS).

The Islamabad-based think tank said the fatalities included 401 militants, 112 security personnel, 74 civilians and 19 members of peace committees, marking the highest monthly militant death toll in more than a decade and the highest number of security force fatalities since January 2023.

PICSS said July witnessed eight suicide attacks, including five vehicle-borne bombings, the highest monthly total in the past decade. Kidnapping incidents also doubled from 33 in June to 66 in July.

The report identified Balochistan as the worst-affected province, where the death toll surged by 241% to 372. Security force deaths in the province rose from six in June to 62 in July, while militant fatalities climbed to 238.

Mainland Khyber Pakhtunkhwa also saw a sharp increase in violence, recording 154 deaths, more than double the previous month. The former tribal districts recorded a slight decline in overall fatalities but higher civilian and security force casualties.

PICSS said Punjab, Islamabad, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan reported no militant violence during July, although security forces arrested suspected militants in Punjab and Sindh.

According to the report, 2,786 people have been killed in Pakistan during the first seven months of 2026 in militant attacks and counterterrorism operations, including 1,857 militants, 463 civilians, 434 security personnel and 32 peace committee members, reflecting a significant escalation in the country's security challenges.
