Indonesia suspends talks on Trump’s ‘Board of Peace’ initiative amid Middle East escalation

By The South Aisa Times

JAKARTA - Indonesia has suspended all discussions on the proposed “Board of Peace,” an initiative launched by Donald Trump, as military tensions continue to escalate across the Middle East.

Foreign Minister Sugiono said the decision was taken in light of the latest regional developments, particularly the growing conflict involving Iran, according to the Middle East Eye.

He said the worsening situation has shifted international focus toward managing the consequences of the ongoing confrontation

Sugiono added that Jakarta plans to hold consultations with partners in the Gulf region, whose security and political interests are directly affected by the rising tensions and continued attacks.

The proposed council had already drawn criticism within Indonesia, with several political and religious groups opposing the country’s involvement. Critics argue that participation in an initiative led by the Trump administration could undermine Indonesia’s long-standing diplomatic support for the Palestinian territories and the broader Palestinian cause.

In a related statement, the Indonesian Ulema Council called on the government to fully withdraw from the initiative, saying such a body would have limited effectiveness while military operations and regional instability persist.

Indonesia has traditionally pursued an active diplomatic role in Middle East affairs, often advocating for peaceful solutions and support for Palestinian statehood.
