Iran thanks Pakistan , announces ceasefire and halt to strikes

By The South Asia Times

TEHRAN - Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has credited Pakistan for its key diplomatic role in de-escalation efforts, as Tehran announced it would halt defensive military operations if attacks against the country cease.

In a statement issued on behalf of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, Araghchi expressed “gratitude and appreciation” to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir for their “tireless efforts” to help end the conflict in the region.

The Iranian minister said the decision followed diplomatic outreach led by Islamabad, alongside a request from the United States to initiate negotiations based on a 15-point proposal. He also referenced an announcement by Donald Trump indicating acceptance of Iran’s 10-point framework as a basis for talks.

“If attacks against Iran are halted, our powerful armed forces will cease their defensive operations,” the statement said. It added that safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz would be ensured for two weeks, coordinated with Iranian forces.

Earlier, Trump announced a two-week suspension of U.S. bombing operations against Iran, describing it as a “double-sided ceasefire,” contingent on Tehran reopening the vital maritime route.

Araghchi also thanked Islamabad for its role in easing tensions following what he described as “unprovoked aggression” involving the United States and Israel.

Iran’s security body later characterized the development as a “historic” outcome after weeks of conflict, claiming the proposed framework includes a path toward a permanent ceasefire, sanctions relief, and the withdrawal of U.S. forces from the region.

The developments mark a fragile but significant opening for diplomacy, with Pakistan emerging as a central mediator in efforts to prevent further escalation in the Middle East.
