Gulf tensions escalate as Saudi intercepts drones, energy facilities targeted after Israel hit Iran gas field

Riyadh/Doha - Saudi Arabia said Thursday its air defense systems intercepted and destroyed five Iranian drones targeting the capital Riyadh and eastern regions, adding to earlier claims that it had downed 13 drones and a ballistic missile launched from Iran.

In neighboring Bahrain, authorities sounded warning sirens and urged residents to seek shelter, reflecting growing fears of a wider regional escalation.

The surge in hostilities follows an Israeli strike on Iran’s South Pars gas field -- the world’s largest -- which halted production at key refineries.

Hours later, Iran retaliated by launching missile attacks on Qatar’s Ras Laffan Industrial City, the country’s main liquefied natural gas hub, raising alarm over global energy security.

Qatar strongly condemned Iranian strikes on energy facilities in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, calling them a “blatant violation” of international law and warning they threaten global energy supplies, maritime navigation, and the environment.

Doha also expelled Iranian military and security attaches in response to the attacks.

Donald Trump said Israel would refrain from further strikes on Iran’s gas infrastructure unless Tehran escalates, but warned that any additional attack on Qatar’s LNG facilities could trigger a massive US response.

The conflict has intensified since a joint offensive by Israel and the United States on Feb. 28, which reportedly killed around 1,300 people, including Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Iran has since launched retaliatory drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf states hosting US military assets, raising fears of a broader regional war.
