Pakistan, IAEA chief agree Islamabad MoU remains best path to ease regional tensions

ISLAMABAD - Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and International Atomic Energy Agency chief Rafael Grossi have agreed that implementation of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) remains the best way to help defuse escalating regional tensions, Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry said Tuesday.
Dar spoke with Grossi, the IAEA director-general and a candidate for the next United Nations secretary-general, late Monday night, according to a statement issued by the Foreign Ministry.
The two officials discussed the evolving regional situation and the need for diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation.
Grossi offered technical support from the IAEA if required, the ministry said, without providing further details about the possible assistance.
The reference to the Islamabad MoU comes as Pakistan continues to emphasize diplomatic engagement and implementation of agreed understandings as a means of reducing tensions in the region.
Dar reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, as well as respect for international law and international treaties.
He also stressed the importance of the United Nations system in advancing the global agenda for peace and development.
Dar wished Grossi success in his campaign for the position of UN secretary-general.
