China conducts joint Air-Sea drills near disputed Huangyan Dao amid South China Sea tensions

BEIJING— China's People's Liberation Army (PLA) Southern Theater Command on Saturday conducted joint maritime and air exercises around Huangyan Dao, also known as Scarborough Shoal, saying the drills were aimed at enhancing combat readiness and safeguarding what Beijing calls its territorial sovereignty and maritime rights.

According to the PLA, the exercises involved naval and air assets operating in the waters and airspace surrounding the disputed shoal. Chinese state media reported that H-6K bombers armed with YJ-12 anti-ship missiles, a Type 071 amphibious transport dock, and other naval vessels participated in the drills.

The exercises come amid renewed tensions between China and the Philippines over competing claims in the South China Sea. Beijing recently condemned Manila's submission of a nautical chart covering the disputed area to the United Nations, calling the move illegal and a violation of China's sovereignty.

Separately, the China Coast Guard said it carried out law enforcement drills near Huangyan Dao, while Chinese authorities announced new management regulations for the Huangyan Dao National Nature Reserve.

The Philippines maintains its claims over the shoal, while Beijing asserts the area is an inherent part of Chinese territory. The South China Sea remains a major source of regional tension, with overlapping territorial claims involving several countries.
