Freedom fighters attack Indian Army convoy in Kashmir, 2 soldiers killed, 12 injured: Report

By The South Asia Times

SRINAGAR - Kashmiri freedom fighters reportedly opened fire on an Indian Army vehicle in Rajouri early this morning, followed by an improvised explosive device (IED) blast, leaving at least two soldiers dead and twelve others injured, according to initial reports from local sources.

The attack comes amid a surge of attacks in Jammu & Kashmir over the past two to three weeks, with several assaults on Indian security forces reported across the region.

On Saturday, local police reportedly installed posters in multiple areas naming Kashmiri youths allegedly involved in ongoing attacks on security personnel.

Authorities have linked these incidents to a network of freedom fighters targeting Indian forces, although the Indian Army has not issued an official statement on today’s attack as of the time of filing this report.

Local police also refused to confirm the latest attack and said they have no information about any attack.

Earlier this month, the Indian Army’s Northern Command had emphasized operational readiness and counterterrorism efforts in the region. On January 31, Lt Gen Pratik Sharma, Army Commander of Northern Command, visited Kishtwar to review the counterterrorism grid and assess operational preparedness.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for today’s assault.
